Books, Maps & Other Resources Wenthworth County & City of Hamilton Ontario Genealogy & History More Canadian Resources | More Ontario Resources More Wentworth County & Hamilton City Resources BOOK - Gleanings From Grimsby. By Dorothy Turcotte.
Author, Dorothy Turcotte and the staff of the Grimsby Archives have made good use of years of historical information, documents and photos collected at the Archives.
After following leads about the rumour of the zipper being invented in Grimsby, or simply seeking out information about some of the interesting people and places of Grimsby's past, Turcotte published her book Gleanings from Grimsby. The book, printed with the support of the Grimsby Historical Society, is filled with historical tidbits collected at the Grimsby Archives since it opened its doors in 1999. "We covered things people might not know about Grimsby's history or maybe haven't heard before," says Turcotte. "So much of it has come from people coming in and asking questions and sharing information. In a couple of instances we didn't know something and thought we should find out." The result is a book that touches on everything from local heroes and heroines, places you could eat and stay in Grimsby's past, famous connections to Grimsby and even a section on unique events in Grimsby, including Wayzgoose, the Music Series and Thursday at Ten. The heroes and heroines, she said, are a mixture of the well-known and some unknown. There are war heroes, familiar faces such as Mike Barretto and the late recycling pioneer Ed McAlpine. Then there's some of the interesting stories Grimsby residents might not know about, such as a story about someone like Catherine Miller, a former Olympic coach and athlete. "At one point there were so many that I thought it could be a separate book," said Turcotte. As for famous connections, there's everyone from Del Lord, a Canadian pioneer in early Hollywood, to former National Hockey League player and coach Toe Blake. "Toe Blake used to come to Grimsby to practice every fall when he was with the Montreal Maroons," said Turcotte, adding he married a Grimsby woman, Betty Walters and regularly returned to the town. While here he stayed in a trailer on the Walters family farm and the team practiced at the old Niagara Packers building. The look at some Grimsby events, such as Wayzgoose and the Music Series, said Turcotte, was to identify some of Grimsby's signature events that don't necessarily happen in other communities. There's even a chapter filled with quick tidbits as a "do you know?" feature. "It's interesting things people don't know about Grimsby," said Turcotte, noting one example is the fact Grimsby used to have a marketplace which used to sit on the grounds where the Archives now sits, before the Carnegie Building was built. Even the front and back cover of the book contain some Grimsby history. The cover, for example, features a reproduction of a painting by Group of Seven artists Lawren Harris, called Summer Houses at Grimsby Beach 1926. The painting, used in cooperation with the Sobey Foundation in Halifax and Joyner Waddington's Canadian Fine Art in Toronto, led to some research into connections of the artist to the area. Turcotte said they learned Harris' grandfather had a foundry in Beamsville and married a Beamsville girl. The back cover features a picture of an old rose bush which has original roots from Pennsylvania in 1790. It was planted in Grimsby in 1865, but was later re-planted in Toronto. Recently one of five successful clippings grown into plants was returned to Grimsby and is being taken care of by a Grimsby Garden Club member. 178 pages 5.5 X 8.5" Softcover Bibliography Published October 2007 ISBN978-0-9692045-1-0
