History reveals that from 1787 to 1815. the Presbyterian Church was the first to hold services in Cornwall Ontario. The first pastor to the congregation was the Reverend John Bethune of Williamstown. Services were held monthly. From 1815 to 1827 services were held more regularly by Rev. Joseph Johnston and Rev. Harry Leith. Both men were masters of the District High School. The first church building was a log structure on the east side of Pitt Street located approximately where the present Bank of Montreal is today [2007]. The building was referred to as the Presbyterian Meeting House. A white frame church was built in 1827 and at the same the time the first Kirk Session was formed. The church was known as the Scotch Church. The name St. John's was adopted in 1831. In 1888 the cornerstone of the present St. John's building was laid. The much larger and impressive stone building was officially opened on March 17, 1889. In 1959 a new church hall, know as Caldwell Hall, was built. This facility houses a large gymnasium/hall with stage and dressing room facilities, offices and large modern kitchen.
This book contains transcriptions of Presbyterian baptisms, marriages and burials as recorded in the church registers between 1833 and 1856.
