BOOK - MCNAB - a novel of dramatized history
by David Mulholland.
The year is 1825. Archibald McNab, 13th Chief of Clan McNab, has eluded his creditors in Scotland, and escaped to Upper Canada. The Laird’s charm and noble bearing win him the confidence of the Family Compact—the aristocratic British clique who control the government—and he convinces Lieutenant-Governor Sir Peregrine Maitland to entrust him with the settlement of a township in what is now Eastern Ontario, 60 kilometres west of Ottawa.
When the Laird brings over 115 emigrants from Perthshire, he tells the Highlanders—crofters (farmers) with virtually no education—that the government has given him the land—that he owns the township! He assigns lots and imposes a feudal system by having his settlers sign bonds that oblige them to pay rent to him and his heirs forever.
Led by Donald Cameron, the settlers fight the tyranny of their Chief, who holds tenaciously to the tradition of the Scottish clan. In contrast, there is a parallel story of how settlers in Albany County, New York, deal with life under a similar feudal system.
And there’s romance! McNab’s piper, Malcolm Kenneth MacGregor, has a turbulent relationship with Colleen O’Malley, an Irish lass who challenges his beliefs about marriage and women. Her passionate independence takes his heart on a wild ride!
