BOOK - The Story of Renfrew. From the Coming of the First Settlers about 1820 to 1928.
By W. E. Smallfield, Rev. Robert Campbell, D.Sc., William Smallfield
This historical reprint by Global Heritage Press Inc.

Author, William Elgood Smallfield (22 October 1861 - 21 April 1926) was a man of many accomplishments: mayor of Renfrew for several years in the early 1900s, staunch supporter of the Renfrew Fair, leader in the Sons of Temperance movement, and noted journalist, editor and publisher. But his greatest contribution to the town of Renfrew, according to his obituary in the Ottawa 'Citizen', was his book on the history of Renfrew, Ontario.

The history originated in a series of articles in the 'Renfrew Mercury' in collaboration with the Reverend Doctor Robert Campbell, minister of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Renfrew. Dr. Campbell contributed the early history of Renfrew as well as a number of biographies of early residents interviewed by him. After Dr. Campbell's death on 25 December 1907. Mr. Smallfield carried on alone and completed the series of articles which covered the period up to the beginning of the twentieth century.

Mr. Smallfield retired in 19I9 and had his articles published in book form as volume one of 'The Story of Renfrew'. He intended to carry on with the history in volume two but ill health intervened and he died in 1926. His son William began a sequel but his untimely death in 1928 cut his effort short. In fact his section of the book ends mid-sentence.

This book includes the content of the original book plus the section begun by William Smallfield junior. The two manuscripts provide an exceptional view of life in Renfrew from the earliest days. One word of caution - some of the references in volume one were left unchanged from the text in the original articles even though they were no longer correct in terms of property ownership. Mr. Sma1lfield clarified many of the discrepancies in his NOTES RESPECTING CERTAIN LOCATIONS MENTIONED IN THE STORY immediately fol1owing his PREFACE to volume onc.

There are descendants of the people mentioned in this history scattered throughout North America and genealogists and historians may be grateful for this remarkable history.

Mr. Smallfield expressed the hope that "the Story will be read with interest by many of the Renfrewites of later generations; and will be found useful in after years through having preserved touch with the pioneers and their works." This new edition helps to make his hope come true.
