Books, Maps & Other Resources Peterborough County, Ontario Genealogy & History More Canadian Resources | More Ontario Resources More Peterborough County Resources BOOK - Harvey Township, An Illustrated History, & Family Name Index (Two book set) Edited by Alan G. Brunger
Harvey is the largest geographical township in southern Ontario and possesses a more varied landscape and history than most. South Harvey is relatively agricultural with numerous farms whereas north Harvey is a forested land within the red granite of the Canadian Shield. This book presents the story of 160 years of local history. It examines communities, families, personal recollections, memories, working life, social happenings, institutions and municipal government. The text is lavishly illustrated with several hundred old photographs, sketches by local artists and detailed maps. A subject index makes the book useful for scholar and general reader alike. Before 1850 lumbering and sawmilling dominated Harvey's economy. Later improvements in transportation encouraged many settlers and communities developed in different parts of the township - Buckhorn, Lakehurst, Nogies Creek, Rockcroft, Deer Bay and along the Oregon Trail. Tourism and cottaging encouraged by the TrentSevern Waterway, emerged later as economic mainstays.
Harvey's special character has fostered strong local allegiance among descendants of its pioneers. The township is in many ways a metaphor for Ontario, and perhaps Canada, in terms of its topography and diversity.Harvey Township, An Illustrated History includes a second book entitled Two Book Set (we will not split sets):
