BOOK - Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Dominion of Canada - Lanark County
(Commonly known as the Lanark County Historical Atlas of 1880).
This premium-quality, limited-edition reprint published by Hammerburg Productions, Toronto, 2007
Behind today's high-speed cities are the slower paced memories of yester-year. These memories though often faded, have not dissappeared. They survive in old books, maps, documents, census records and black and white photographic views, hidden in the recesses of museums and archives. The Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Dominion of Canada - Lanark County, was originally published by H. Beldon and Company in 1880. It contains the maps of all the existing provinces at the time, as well as maps of the places where early Canadians emigrated from: Europe, Asia, North and South America, United States, Oceania and The World. The original edition was published with the final section of the atlas being the dedicated to the history, maps and images of people and places in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada in 1880. This county atlas consists of historical text, township and town maps, portraits, views, and patron's directory. In many county atlases of the time all of the names of residents were marked on the lots of the township maps. For The Dominion of Canada supplements however, only the names of subscribers were recorded on the township maps. All of these atlases were sold by subscription. Those residents of Lanark County who had the means, paid an additional sum to have their names addd to the township maps, contributed biographical sketches, portraits artistic renderings of their properties or businesses included in the atlases. An outstanding quality reproduction that will become a family heirloom.

BOOK - Illustrated Historical Atlas of the County of Peterborough
Published by Fifth Line Press, Stirling, 2009
The full title page of this historical atlas is: "Illustrated Historical Atlas of the County of Peterborough, Ont. Dedicated by Special Permission to His Excellency The Earl of Dufferin K.P.K.C.B. Governor General, Compiled Drawn and Published From Personal Examinations and Surveys by Fifth Line Press, Stirling, Ont. MMIX". Fifth Line Press exercised artistic license with this title page insofar as the book was first published in 2009 in the style of the historical atlases produced in the nineteenth century, and without the "Special Permission" of the long dead Earl of Dufferin. The publisher is not trying to fool anyone. He clearly states in the Foreword that no Peterborough County atlas was created in the 19th century, and that this book is an effort to "address this lapse". The publisher sought to create a historical atlas as they thought it should have been done. The publisher and illustrators travelled the roads of Peterborough County soliciting patrons to represent their farms, families, homes and businesses in the atlas.

Ten local illustrators prepared the drawings of the century homes, farms and people represented in this book. The historical narrative was extracted from the book The History of the County of Peterborough, originally published by C. Blacket Robinson, Toronto, 1884. Township maps and town plan maps originally published between 1820-1884 by a variety of historical sources are included. A few of the maps are not as clearly reproduced as they might have been, probably due to quality issues with the originals -- others are very good. However the illustrations of century homes, farms and people are very well done.

The atlas is published in large format 18" X 13 3/4". This copy is numbered 173 of the single limited print run of 500 copies. This is a new uncirculated book with printed pages that are crisp and clear on acid free paper with its original solid, premium binding.
