BOOK - The Beaverton Story, Harvest of Dreams.
by: Beaverton Thorah Eldon Historical Society

The Beaverton Story, Harvest of Dreams is the first book by the Beaverton Thorah Eldon Historical Society regarding the history of Beaverton, Ontario. A second book was also published by this group.

As the present and former residents of Beaverton and the surrounding countryside celebrated the centennial of this village's incorporation, it was natural that thoughts turn to the past. The Beaverton Thorah Eldon Historical Society was formed to investigate and preserve the history and artifacts relating to this area's early years. In an attempt to share with the community the results of our historical research, they wrote The Beaverton Story.

This book covers Thorah's pioneer period and Beaverton's formative years. One chapter takes a close look at the Village in 1884 as Farmer Baldy takes an extensive jaunt through its streets. Successive chapters take the reader into the Twentieth Century. However, the emphasis in this history is on the Nineteenth Century.

Settlers began arriving in Thorah Township in the 1820's, and settlement continued for the next two to three decades. As the Township "grew up," Beaverton, with a growing population, became the centre of business, church, social, and recreational life. By 1884 the village was ready to become a separate political entity.

While many sources have been consulted and studied, early issues of the Beaverton Express, have been extremely valuable in learning about the past. Local individuals and families provided many documents, pictures and other resources for this book.
