BOOK - County of Ontario, Short Notes as to the Early Settlement and Progress of the County and Brief References to the Pioneers and Some County Men Who Have Taken a Prominent Part in Provincial and Dominion Affairs.
By J. E. Farewell. (Originally published in 1907, New Index 2006)
Historical reprint by Global Heritage Press Inc.

This book is a history of Ontario County, with a strong emphasis on "Early Settlement and Progress of the County" until 1907. It includes much information about early pioneers, pioneer families and other distinguished citizens. Though Ontario County was not established until 1851, the family sketches precede the establishment of the county as a civil entitiy, back to the first settlement of the communities that eventually became part of this county.

Ontario County was created in 1851, from the East Riding of York County. It comprised the townships of Rama, Mara, Thorah, Brock, Scott, Uxbridge, Reach, Scugog, Pickering, Whitby and East Whitby, and the town of Oshawa.

In 1974, Ontario County south of the Trent-Severn Waterway and half of Durham County were merged to create the Regional Municipality of Durham. The other half of Durham County was transferred to other neighbouring counties, and the areas of Ontario County north of the Trent-Severn Waterway were transferred to Simcoe County. Don't confuse this Ontario County with a short-lived county of the same name that existed much earlier in the south eastern part of the province. The other Ontario County only existed between 1792-1800 and was very thinly populated. It was comprised of only the islands located in the St. Lawrence River. In 1800 the old Ontario County was disolved and the islands reassigned to adjoining "mainland" counties.
