BOOK - General Register from Niagara North Registry Office #30 St. Catharines Ontario Vol. 1, Instruments No. 1 to No. 500 Registered from 1866 to 1889.
Compiled by: Shirley Kanen-Smith, Carolyn Bassett, Sylvia Bagley, Marilyn B. Jackson.

Land Records are an important source of historical information because they are central to the history of early Ontario (Upper Canada/Canada West) land settlement and development. Many settlers to the province came in search of new opportunities. The ownership of land was central to their vision of independance, freedom and hope for future generations of their family. Land Records represent one of the richest sources of information about not only personal and private property through history but also about our early settlers. Land Registry Office records can help researchers to understand:

Dot the history of a property through its ownership history,

Dot the development of neighbourhoods and communities,

Dot the growth of cities, including exportation of communities by a larger municipality,

Dot the early names of settlements in Ontario,

Dot the growth of transportation routes including roads, railways and waterways,

Dot the dreams and reality of land development schemes.

Land records also offer vital clues and links to the family history of our earliest settlers when few other records survive. For family historians, this index provides critical access to the names, connections and additional little known information about early families in the Niagara region.
