BOOK - Frontenac, Lennox & Addington: An Essay
by C. W. Cooper
Originally published in Kingston in 1856, we are fortunate that Canadian Heritage Publications reprinted the book in 1980. The original work has been supplemented in the facsimile edition with town & village plans and illustrations from Wallings 1860 Map of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.
The object of the original essay, and therefore the book was designed to bring more prominently before the public than had been done before, the features and resources of the United Counties of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Counties, Ontario in order to promote settlement in the area.
The book provides careful sketches of the public buildings and institutions, trade and manufacturing, commerce and finance for the county in general and the townships and villages separately as well as information about the geological features, mineral production, roads, the opening of new lands for settlement and the features of the surrounding countryside. There is further information about the cost of various goods and services in the 1850s, information about transportations routes, waterways (including the effect of the Rideau Canal), churches, population accounts, schools, people and politics.
It is interesting to read this work and ask yourself if you would have been tempted to settle in Frontenac, Lennox and Addington counties in the 1850s. This book is a must for those with roots in the area or a passion for the history of these counties.
105 pp, [6] leaves of plates : maps ; 22 cm. Index, perfect-bound.
