BOOK - The Story of Brockville – Men and Women Making a Canadian Community on The Unites States Frontier, 1749-2007
By Glen Lockwood.

This long awaited Brockville history book has been skillfully written by Dr. Glenn Lockwood who has also authored many other community histories Montague – ‘A Social History of an Irish Ontario Township, 1783-1980 and Beckwith, Irish and Scottish Identities in a Canadian Community 1816-1991. Glenn is a professional historian known for his in-depth research, for capturing the essence of a place and its people and for writing a superb local history.

Glenn J. Lockwood was raised in the Brockville hinterland village of Toledo and Newbliss, and attended the Athens District High School. He completed undergraduate studies in Visual Arts and History with a B. ED at Queen’s University. In 1988 he received a Ph.D. in History from the University of Ottawa. In 1982 he was awarded a certificate of merit by the Canadian Historical Association. He currently is archivist at the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa Archives.

Detailed appendices contain population charts, names of original Loyalist settlers, municipal leaders, business directories and names of Brockvillians killed in WWI and WWII.

This book is filled with maps, photos and drawings accompanied by informative captions. The book jacket is a copy of an original watercolour by Pam Warren McKinnon, CSPWC, showing a view up Court House Avenue.

The back of the book jacket is another copy of a watercolour sketch by Pam Warren McKinnon. This is a view looking north up Court House Avenue, painted in 2004. Part of the red sandstone façade of the 1884 post office can be seen on the far left, with the 1924 War Memorial sculpted by Hamilton McCarthy prominent in the foreground, and the dolphin and turtle fountain put up in memory of John H. Fulford in the middle ground.

On page 582, 583 is a beautiful aerial view of the Brockville waterfront looking west over the Thousand Islands, as photographed by (Ian Coristine, c2002).

Some interesting tidbits from the book:
    Reverend Smart
William Smart came to Canada from England when he was 23 years old. He arrived in Brockville in October 1811 and immediately began to organize his congregation. He held his first services in the new District of Johnstown Courthouse. By July 9, 1814, his first church was built on in Brockville. The present church, built in 1879, is the third one built on this site.

    Charles Luckey
Charlie Luckey was born in 1867 on his family farm in Newbliss. When he was 26 years old a terrible crime was committed. On December 14, 1893, he became the last man to be hung in Brockville, as he was accused and convicted of murdering his family.

    Professor Squires
On Dominion Day, 1874, Professor Squires, the notable aeronaught from New York, came to Brockville to demonstrate an amazing new device - the helium balloon. Swarms of people gathered in and around Courthouse Green to watch as Professor Squired ascended in his balloon. Unfortunately, a gust of wind blew it off course and the balloon was caught on the spire of Wall Street United Church.

    Mrs. Kincaid of the I.O.D.E.
On August 19. 1912, the General Brock chapter of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, presented a monument of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock to the town of Brockville. Located on Courthouse Green, the monument marked the centennial anniversary of the Generals death. The bronze bust and granite base were built by Ottawa sculptor Hamilton McCarthy and took seven years to complete.

    Brockville Trust Bank Robbery
During the late evening of May 3rd, 1958, three men entered the Fulford Building through a side door. With drills and picks the three men broke through three solid brick walls and a half- inch thick steel wall of the north wall of the main vault. They gathered every piece of jewelry, cash and bonds possible. Upon escape Rene Martin left his bank book behind in the bank. On May 5th, Martin was cornered in the streets of Montreal and arrested

    William Comstock
William Comstock began to manufacture patent medicine in Brockville in 1854. His Brockville factory was located in the Comstock Building on Courthouse Avenue. His firm produced Dead Shot Worm Pellets, McKenzie's Dead Shot Worm Candy, and most famous of all, Dr. Morris's Indian Root Pills. Who was William Comstock's strongest local competition in the patent medicine industry? George T. Fulford, who made Pink Pills for Pale People.

    The Brockville Infantry Company (1862)
A volunteer militia infantry company was formed in Brockville in 1862 by Captain Jacob Buell. In June of 1866 Irish-American Fenians raided across the Niagara River into Ontario and from Vermont into Quebec. Premier John A. Macdonald called out the militia soldiers to protect Canada. The Infantry Company and Brockville Rifles were called upon to protect Brockville.
In Glenn’s attempt to explain Brockville’s development he shows Brockville did not just happen. It was made. He explored many subjects which brought him to this conclusion. Social, political, industrial, and military subjects make this a well researched, and informative history book , a must not only for every Brockville home but for all who ever lived in this river community, or is curious about Brockville.
