Kenora District, Ontario Genealogy & History More Canadian Resources | More Ontario Resources More Kenora District Resources BOOK - Cairnbrogie School- Tales of a Northern Township by Russell Morton.
This book is for those who remember the one room school, and for their children and grandchildren. It traces the history of a township in Northwestern Ontario with its one room school as the focal point. Wainwright Township near Dryden was opened for settlement in 1896, and was described in glowing brochures from the Department of Agriculture- "...a vast extent of unbroken, rolling country...almost ready for the plow." Settlers poured in, and some stayed. Cairnbrogie School opened in 1901 and lasted 60 years. This is the story of the township and of that school- much of it in the words of those who were there- students, teachers, trustees, truants. The prolific Morton families of Wainwright supplied many students for Cairnbrogie over the years- more than enough to fill the one room school if all had attended at the same time. For one of them, the author, researching and writing this book has been a return to his rural roots. 175 pp., Soft Cover, 6" x 9", 1939, ISBN 0-9684888-0-3.
