Books, Maps & Other Resources Halton County, Ontario Genealogy & History More Canadian Resources | More Ontario Resources More Halton County Resources BOOK - From Pathway to Skyway Revisited- The Story of Burlington. by Claire Emery Machan.
The authors of this history spent 15 months solving an intricate jigsaw puzzle. It began with a myriad of disjointed facts and stories from the days of the Mohawk Indians, United Empire Loyalists and the nucleus of a community that grew around Brant's Block. The puzzle began to take shape as copious notes were compiled about people and their lives in Wellington Square, Aldershot, Kilbride and Nelson Township centers such as Appleby, and Zimmerman which exist today only in people's memories.Interviews with long-time residents and members of Burlington's pioneer families proved fascinating, and the hours spent culling stories and facts from old diaries, yellowed documents and hand-written council minutes, began to give a clear picture of the town. Pieces of the jigsaw puzzle were finally fitted together with the story of amalgamation in 1958, but history books never have an absolute ending and up-to-date facts about Burlington were being added, even as chapters were sent to the publishers. Through research and editing, the Burlington Historical Society has endeavored to make this volume historically accurate as far as possible with the information available. For the sake of brevity, it was not possible to use all the material collected and it must be noted that the spelling of some names and places has changed through the years. 341 pp., Soft Cover, 6" x 9", 1997, ISBN 0-9691040-1-4.
