Books, Maps & Other Resources Halton County, Ontario Genealogy & History More Canadian Resources | More Ontario Resources More Halton County Resources BOOK - The Story of Bronte Harbour by Philip Brimacombe. Nestled on the north shore of Lake Ontario halfway between Toronto and Hamilton is the village of Bronte. Although it has been absorbed by its larger neighbor to the east, Oakville, the old village can still be identified by the colourful frame houses and shops which cluster at the mouth of the Twelve Mile Creek. The name Bronte has an interesting origin. Lord Nelson, whose famous victory at sea at Trafalger has been commemorated in many place names in the southern part of Halton, was granted the Duchy of Bronte in Sicily by King Ferdinand of Naples and Sicily in gratitude for Nelson's saving the Neopolitan monarchy from the French in 1799. The Duchy of Bronte was a 17, 000 acre estate lying on the sun-drenched western slopes of Mount Etna. Prior to his Knighthood Nelson signed his name "Nelson & Bronte". Nelson.....Bronte.....Trafalger: patriotic place names of the early 1800's, legendary references for a village with a maritime legend of its own. 40 pp., Soft Cover, 6" x 9", 1975, ISBN 0-919822-96-7.
