(Upper Canada, Canada West) Concerns more than one County More Canadian Resources | More Ontario Resources
BOOK - An Index of the Land Claim Certificates- of Upper Canada Militiamen who served in the War of 1812-1814,
by: Wilfred R. Lauber. The Militia in Upper Canada existed as a defense complements to regular army troops. For the most part, these men were merely required to muster and undergo minimal training on one day annually. The War of 1812 changed that passive role for many "citizen soldiers" who found themselves under marching orders. Later, they were entitled to bounty lands from the crown, as rewards for their service. The material from which this index derives is in Record Group 9 at the National Archives of Canada. Wilfred Lauber makes this material more accessible by giving exact archival references for obtaining copies of files, as well as providing the militia unit in which a man served. Documents in a file vary from one individual to another. The Ontario Genealogical Society is proud to publish another useful resource guide. Researchers will find this as effective companion to Men of Upper Canada: Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829. 106pp., Soft Cover, 8.5" x 11",1999, ISBN 0-7779-0190-0.
