BOOK - Men of Upper Canada- Militia Nominal Rolls 1828 - 1829. (census substitute)
By: Bruce Elliot, Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai. Beginning in 1793 the able bodied male inhabitants of Upper Canada (Ontario) were required by law to enroll as militiamen. Late in 1828 the commanding officers of each regiment were ordered to submit a roll containing the names of the men in their units from age 19 to 39. Despite certain exemptions, the resulting returns constitute the closest thing to a province-wide census that survives for a genealogically difficult period, coming midway between the Loyalist influx of the 1780s and the first fully nominal census in 1852.
The list identifies and locates some 27,000 male inhabitants of Upper Canada, including officers plus some reservists aged 40 to 60. The lists of men are organized geographically by unit. Many of those who appear in a geographically organized unit are related to each other, or have friends and neighbors from the old country in the same units. There is also an complete index to help you find specific persons.
