Researchers seeking immigration records of specific people are often unaware of the diverse and plentiful records created at the provincial level. This guide-book is designed to provide an overview of immigration records created by and for the Province of Ontario as they relate to those who immigrated the land that is now called Ontario, during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Notes regarding the updates included in this 2019 edition:
The content of Fawne Stratford-Devai's 2003 edition of this book has stood up to the test of time admirably. With that said, this new 2019 edition includes a few important updates. 2019 edition updates include:
  • A new 'Ontario Department of Emigration Records: Code Conversion List' (page 31a) that was developed and contributed by Jane E. MacNamara. Since this book was written in 2003, the Archives of Ontario has changed the RG 11 series codes from letters to numbers-as well as enriched and realigned the descriptions. Researchers need both codes to use the records.

    • Use the current code to learn more about the records in the Archives of Ontario's descriptive database and find the microfilms in the inter-loan catalogue.

    • The former codes must be used on the Archives of Ontario microfilms and to find images digitized on FamilySearch.org.

  • Updates to the website addresses provided in 'Internet Resources' section beginning on page 45. Those updates were made by the publisher and were accurate at the time of publication in June of 2019.

  • Cover design was changed for the 2019 edition by the publisher.
