BOOK - Away Back in Clarendon and Miller (township) (Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada) By Charles A. Armstrong The townships of Clarendon and Miller, within the present day Municipality of North Frontenac, two hours west of Ottawa, are the subject of this fascinating local history by Charles A. Armstrong. Charlie Armstrong has given us a detailed, well-researched, and colourful record of the two townships and adjacent settlements that were dependent on township roads for access to the outside world of pre-Confederation Canada. His depiction of all aspects of life as it evolved on this vast tract of forestland, from lumbering in the 1800s, through farming to the advent of tourism, is an invaluable preservation of our early area history. In the final chapter, and supplementary annex from the second edition, pioneer families dating back prior to 1895 are traced down through the years. The book has become an invaluable reference guide for local residents of the area as well as far-flung descendants across the continent. Period photos, records and maps bring it all vividly to life. About the Author Charlie Armstrong was born in Mountain Grove, Ontario, on September 27, 1908. He moved to Plevna in Clarendon and Miller in 1911. In 1928, he left for business college and a 30-year career in the Air Force. He continued in life insurance and real estate before finally retiring to devote himself to his Plevna retreat. Away Back in Clarendon and Miller was the first of several manuscripts that kept him busy when he wasn't gardening, or hunting, or fishing or just relaxing with a book and his beloved pipe. He died in July 2003. 123 pages, photos, illus, fold out map, ISBN 1-894263-97-9
