Nearly three decades ago, Peter Andersen extracted and recorded marriage records from the church registers of a long list of Lanark County churches of various faiths. He also compiled lists of Strays -- marriages of Lanark County natives who married outside of the county, or in other churches. Extracts of marriage notifications published in the Lanark Observer newspaper (Lanark Village) have been included in this collection.

Completed long before personal computers were in widespread use, Mr. Andersen used a typewriter to create the records that make up this collection. We scanned the manually typed pages as originally prepared. We have not altered or edited the work.

These seven hundred pages of marriage records have been built into a single searchable digital file that is bookmarked by the name of the source and date range of records contained within each section. (e.g. Perth Presbyterian Church 1817-1857). Being able to search through all 41 sets of records with a single search is especially helpful when you are not sure of where, when, or in which church that a marriage was solemnized. The included pages were originally intended for personal use. Several pages include manual corrections and changes by Mr. Andersen. We've left those pages as we found them.

This collection includes more than 80,000 individual names of brides, grooms, and parents of the bride and groom involving approximately 14,000 marriages between 1817 and 1967.

Information included in each record (some exceptions):
  • Name of the bride
  • Name of the groom
  • Date of the marriage
  • Names of the mother and father of the bride including the maiden surname of the mother
  • Names of the mother and father of the groom including the maiden surname of the mother
  • Name and location of the church where the marriage was recorded
  • A few entries include comments such as 'widow of_________'; widower of ___________'", etc

Using the Collection:
The collection is organized in a continuous run of pages beginning with a "title page" that lists the name of the church/source from which the records were extracted. The marriage extracts for that church follow its title page. The next church's title page appears after the final page of marriages from the previous church's records, followed by that church's marriages, and so on. Convenient hot-linked bookmarks are listed on the left hand side of the page should you choose to browse the records of a specific church/es.

Bookmarks are listed in left-hand panel of your computer screen.
The book is in the right-hand panel. The search box is at the top of the screen

The entire collection can be searched by entering a surname, given name, or word/s in the Adobe search box at the top of the screen. When you find a record that is of interest, scroll up the page to locate the name/title page of the church or source from which the record was transcribed.
