Louise Hope compiled the records in this eight volume series to create a comprehensive source for extracts of births, marriages, deaths and other genealogical records that were published in The Perth Courier newspaper. The extraction work began in 1974 and was completed 15 years later. She included comprehensive indexes so that specific records are easy to find. The books also serve as a valuable finding aid to help researchers locate the exact issue where an event was reported when looking for an original entry in physical, microfilmed and digitized copies of The Perth Courier.

The Perth Courier is the second oldest weekly newspaper in Canada. A local doctor named John Cameron founded the Courier in 1834 and originally publishing it under the banner The Bathurst Courier and Ottawa Gazette. He died of scarlet fever less than one year later. John Cameron's brother Malcolm Cameron took over the Courier and hired James Thompson as editor. Thompson bought the newspaper from Cameron within a few months of being hired and immediately changed the banner to The Bathurst Courier and Ottawa General Advertiser. Thompson added reporters to write local news stories and hired agents to secure advertising from businesses that provided products and services in the surrounding area. The banner was changed to The Perth Courier in 1857 and has retained that name to this day. The newspaper was purchased by George Walker in 1863. It remained in the Walker family for more than 130 years. The Perth Courier is now owned and operated by Metroland Media Group Ltd. which publishes more than 140 community newspapers and specialty publications across Ontario.

Regarding print quality:
Insofar as this project began long before the advent of personal computers, all of the extracts were manually keyed on a typewriter. Those typewritten pages have been reproduced in this book as they were originally created by the compiler. Over the years some masters have been copied, recopied, and annotated by hand. The result is that most pages are not up to modern printing standards. However, the extracts are thorough and complete as originally transcribed.
Regarding Index and page numbering:
Indexes are very complete with extensive cross referencing. Both married and maiden names of women are indexed where available. The unusual page numbering system is clearly described in each volume's Introduction and is easy to use.
