The hardcover version is temporarily out of print however the available PDF download and CD versions were produced from our original print master and are completely searchable.

Originally published in 1967 to document the settlement and local history of Hastings County in Ontario, Canada up to 1966, this fine work has been long out of print. Author, Gerry Boyce writes "With 8,000 copies in circulation, one could presume that there would be no need for a reprint. Such is not the case. The book has been out of print for several years, but prices for used copies (sometimes in poor condition) have risen dramatically". Historic Hastings has stood the test of time -- as highly regarded today as when originally published.

Readers and family history researchers will appreciate the new and expanded index in this edition. Larry McQuoid and the Quinte Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society contributed an improved and greatly expanded index to which the author has added additional entries for the new content in this edition. The original index in the 1967 edition excluded many family names listed in the chapters on individual municipalities, the new index includes all these names. This certainly will benefit genealogists.

Generously illustrated with period photographs and maps.

The hardcover edition is beautifully bound in a deeply grained dark burgundy covering with heavy gold stampings on both the front cover and spine. It is printed on premium grade, acid-free paper.

Historic Hastings, Volume One, with its improved and greatly expanded Index, remains the definitive local history of Hastings County.

For those wondering why this book has been titled "Volume One", a second volume covering the years from 1967 to 2013 was started but did not see completion due to a combination of health issues of a key individual, and changing priorities in the county admministration.

Reviews:
  • This is the definitive history of Hastings County- Richard Hughes, President of Hastings County Historical Society

  • "Historic Hastings returns, expanded and better than ever.... the definitive history of an entire county, something that has been a reference for thousands of people in the past and will continue to be into the future. Congratulations on a job very well done, Gerry!" - Katherine Sedgwick, Meanwhile at the Manse (blog)

  • "If you're looking for a mention of your ancestors, you'll now have an easier time of it. The previous edition's index listed only people who received more than a passing mention. This time the Quinte branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society helped expand the index by as much as 75 per cent. It now lists every person mentioned in the book, period." - Luke Hendry, Belleville Intelligencer (newspaper)
