BOOK - Death Notices and Obituaries of Nassagaweya with Additions of Nassagaweya Township's Cemetery Headstone Transcripts
Compiled by Joy Simpson
Published by Nasagiweya Historical Society, Campbellville, 2013

Joy Simpson of the Nasagiweya Historical Society has compiled the largest collection of transcriptions of death notices, obituaries, and headstone inscriptions for Nassagaweya Township ever assembled and published in a single book.

This book is an essential resource for everyone researching their roots in Nassageweya Township.

About Nassageweya Township, Ontario:
The spelling of "Nassagaweya" Township has evolved over the years. Its earlier spellings include "Nasagiweya". "Nassagaweya Township is a geographic township and former municipality in Halton Region, Ontario, Canada. The township was created in 1819, its name derived from the Mississauga word nazhesahgewayyong, meaning 'river with two outlets.' This refers to the fact that watercourses in the township drain to both Lake Ontario and the Grand River system. Nassagaweya was originally part of Halton County. When the Regional Municipality of Halton was created in 1974, the township became part of the Town of Milton. Communities within the boundaries of the former township include: Campbellville, Brookville, Campbellville, Haltonville, Darbyville, Guelph Junction and Sayers Mills. Nassagaweya historically contained Eden Mills and borders on Kilbride". Source for the section in italics: Wikipedia

From the book's Preface:
Death/obituary notices are a useful source of information for genealogists or family historians as they often list two or three generations of a family, usually with a mention of roughly where they resided, frequently making note of in-laws as well. Obituaries sometimes also mention places of origin, stories of their emigration and conditions when they arrived in Nassagaweya. Nineteenth century death notices tend to be very short, about two lines or so, giving name, place of death and age. If the deceased was a woman or child, a relative’s name could be included. However, if the person was notable in some way - an early settler or very old one - more details might be given.

Finally, although a determined effort has been made to be inclusive, inevitably some individuals will be missed, particularly those pioneers who passed away with no written death notice or obituary notice available, only a headstone in a cemetery will mark their passing. At the end of the entries is an index of maiden names (if known) cross-referenced with their spousal surname.
