BOOK - Old Newfoundland, A History to 1843 By: P. O'Flaherty. Patrick O'Flaherty's book is a compact narrative history of Newfoundland from the earliest inhabitants to the 19th-century reformers. He has gone over ground travelled by earlier writersbut has added much that is thought provoking and new. This is a human story of conflict, neglect, courage and accomplishment. He ends the story at the crisis of 1841-2, reminding us that Newfoundland, having been granted a constitution that created elective government, had its constitution suspended, not once, but twice by the British. The suspension of 1934 is better known however the suspension of 1841-2 was in a way a pre-figuring of the later one. O'Flaherty explores the causes of this first suspension, which he sees as an event charged with significance. In the story he unravels, and the conclusion he reaches, the reader will find much to ponder. Patrick O'Flaherty is professor emeritus (English) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He has written extensively about the history, literature and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. 277 pgs/indexed/softcover/ISBN0-9680998-2-3
