BOOK - The Irish in Newfoundland 1600-1900,Their Trials, Tribulations and Trimphs
By Mike McCarthy
Ireland and it's people are an important part of our heritage as Newfoundlanders. In almost every corner of this province we find people of Irish descent. Newfoundland's accents, it's music, it's culture are all influenced by our Irish ancestry.

But what brought those first Irish immigrants to Newfoundland? What kind of life did they have here? What experiences shaped them into the Newfoundlanders they became?

This book attemps to answer those questions. Mike McCarthy's painstaking research in into the early Irish experience in Newfoundland has resulted in a book that is a treasure trove of information about those first Irish immigrants. He tells their story from the legendary voyage of Saint Brendan to the modern era. He unearths the names, the dates, the court records and news items and weaves them together into a tapestry of the Irish experience in Newfoundland.

The stories in this book include the success stories and also the failures of the Irish and Newfoundland; the stories of bishops and politicians, of thieves and murderers. McCarthy vividly paints the Irish Roman Catholic experience from the early days of anti-Catholic persecution when a house could be burned to the ground simply because Mass had been said there, to the triumphant building and consecration of the Basilica in St. John's. He tells of the conflicts that embroiled the Irish, from the "faction fights" between Irishmen from different counties, to the fiercely partisan involovement of the clergy in nineteenth century elections.

But most of all, this book tells of men and women who came from a beloved country to an unknown new one, to search for and create a better life for themselves and their children.
