Fenian Raids 1866-1871:
The Fenian raids were attacks by members of the Fenian Brotherhood based in the United States, on British army forts, customs posts and other targets in Canada in order to bring pressure on Britain to withdraw from Ireland, between 1866 and 1871. Most of the raids were successfully repelled by British forces and local militias. While the U.S. authorities arrested the men and confiscated their arms afterwards, there is speculation that many in US government had turned a blind eye to the preparations for the invasion..

As a direct result of the uprisings, Lord Durham, was assigned to report on the grievances among the colonists and find a way to appease them. His report eventually led to greater autonomy in the Canadian colonies, and the union of Upper and Lower Canada into the Province of Canada in 1840..

BOOK - Lincoln at Bay, A Sketch of 1814
By Ernest Green [1923]
New Index by Brenda Young [2009]
Originally published by Tribune-Telegraph Press, Welland, 1923.
This edition published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2009 (CD 2010)

Much has been written concerning the services and sacrifices of the people of Upper Canada (Ontario) during the War of 1812-1814. The author presents an intimate view by relating the experiences of individual participants in one of the most tragic acts of the drama of those years - The Battle of Chippawa. The author explains in the Preface that he relied on oral tradition that was handed down through the families since 1814, but that "the old traditions have been carefully justified by official and other contenporary records and in all particulars wherein such collaboration was possible. Any distorion of historical facts has been carefully avoided". The old families mentioned were from the Townships of Stamford, Thorold, and Pelham.

BOOK - A Matter of Honour: The Life, Campaigns and Generalship of Isaac Brock
By Jonathon Riley. Foreword by Donald E. Graves
Published by Robin Brass Studio. Montreal, 2011
Isaac Brock was the British general responsible for defending the long frontier of Upper Canada with meagre forces in the opening days of the War of 1812. Revered by generations of schoolchildren as the "Saviour of Upper Canada" and commemorated by a towering monument on Queenston Heights, Brock is best known in Canada for his vigorous measures to defend against the invading American forces and for the daring exploit at Queenston Heights in which he died. Brock was a resourceful field commander who believed in offensive measures to keep his opponent off-balance and he is probably best known in the United States for managing to cow U.S. General William Hull into surrendering Detroit, to that general’s eternal shame.

BOOK - The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens, British Subjects, Irish Rebels, & Indian Allies
By Alan Taylor
In this deeply researched and clearly written book, the Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Alan Taylor tells the riveting story of a war that redefined North America. During the early nineteenth century, Britons and Americans renewed their struggle over the legacy of the American Revolution. Soldiers, immigrants, settlers, and Indians fought in a northern borderland to determine the fate of a continent. Would revolutionary republicanism sweep the British from Canada? Or would the British empire contain, divide, and ruin the shaky American republic? A vivid narrative of an often brutal (and sometimes comic) war that reveals much about the tangled origins of the United States and Canada.

BOOK - Strange Fatality, The Battle of Stoney Creek, 1813
By James E. Elliott .
The first detailed account of the little-known battle that changed the course of the War of 1812. Journalist and author James Elliott has compellingly reconstructed one of the least understood actions of the War of 1812. From the rise to brigadier of blacksmith John Chandler, to the Highland heroics of Alexander Fraser, Strange Fatality explores the dynamics of a night battle that stemmed the tide of invasion, cost two generals their freedom and unseated the highest-ranking soldier in the American army. In this ground-breaking study of a battle in which both sides were essentially blind, James Elliott sheds light, not only on a violent donnybrook in the dark, but also on the bizarre train of events that occasioned it. With 10 original maps, over 100 illustrations, portraits and photographs, many never seen before, as well as appendices on battlefield archaeology and the little-known “monument war.”

Chief Tecumseh's death at the Battle of the Thames marked a turning point in the Anglo-American War of 1812. It was also the beginning of a mystery: the mutilation of Native corpses thwarted American attempts to identify Tecumseh's remains, giving rise to the belief that his body had been secretly recovered by his warriors. Tecumseh's Bones teases fact from fiction in the myths and legends surrounding the great chief's burial. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, most of which has never been published, Tecumseh's Bones will fascinate history buffs, historians, and mystery lovers. More information

American Revolution / United Empire Loyalists:
In response to protests in Boston over the British Parliament's attempts to maintain authority over its North American colonies, the British mobilized its army to put down the rebellion. Consequently the rebels formed militias of like-minded individuals to face the British military and to 'discourage' those colonial citizens who wished to remain loyal to the crown. Fighting broke out in 1775, offically ending in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Surviving Loyalists needed to find refuge outside of the United States. The movement of United Empire Loyalists to Canada was a critical event in the settlement of what later became Canada. Loyalists settled throughout the present-day Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. Their descendants migrated throughout Canada and beyond.

BOOK - United Empire Loyalists, Evidence in the Canadian Claims - The Second Report of The Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario, 1904
By Alexander Fraser, Provincial Archivist
Originally published by L.K. Cameron - King's Printer, Toronto, 1905
This book on CD edition by Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2010

The 1904 Bureau of Archives Report consisted of original accounts and evidence of United Empire Loyalist claims that were processed after the American Revolutionary War. Those claims were made in response to a British program that was designed to provide those Americans who had remained loyal to the British during the American Revolution, with land in Canada. After an informative history of the circumstances surrounding the movement of the Loyalists to Canada, and a preamble on the claim process, the bulk of the content of the 1904 Report includes evidence presented to establish that specific "Loyalists" qualified for "UE" status and the resulting benefits. 1436 pages.

BOOK - Sketches Illustrating The Early Settlement and History of Glengarry in Canada
By J. A. MacDonell.
J. A. MacDonell recognized that much had been written on the subject of United Empire Loyalist settlement in Ontario, the War of 1812-14, and the Rebellion of 1837-8, but expressed concern that there was little mention made of the part that the Highlanders of Glengarry played in those conflicts. This book is an fine source of information for those interested in early settlement of the Highlanders in Glengarry and surrounding counties, and the role that they played in the American Revolution, United Empire Loyalist migration and settlement, War of 1812, and the Rebellion of 1837-38.

BOOK - Ontario People: 1796-1803 - NEW PRICE -
With Introduction and Index by Norman K. Crowder
By Keith Fitzgerald
Published by Genealogical Publishing Comany, Baltimore, 1993 (reprinted 1998)
After the American Revolution, several thousand families came to settle in the western part of Quebec, later called Upper Canada, then Canada West and today Ontario. These settlers were former members of American Loyalist regiments, discharged British and German servicemen, and some civilians and refugees. They were offered grants of 200 acres of land on condition that they take an oath of allegiance and remain loyal to the British regime. The military and Loyalist arrivals who had come earlier received larger grants, generally in relation to their services to the Crown, their rank or status, and family size. Some entries show, for example, relationships, deaths, military service, maiden names of married women, and remarriage of widows.

BOOK - Tories, Fighting for the King in America's First Civil War
By Thomas B. Allen
Published by Harper Collins, New York, 2010
A sweeping, dramatic history of the Americans who chose to side with the British in the Revolution. The American Revolution was not simply a battle between independence-minded colonists and the oppressive British. As Thomas B. Allen reminds us, it was also a savage and often deeply personal civil war, in which conflicting visions of America pitted neighbor against neighbor and Patriot against Tory (Loyalist) on the battlefield, the village green, and even in church. The Revolution also produced one of the greatest migrations in Western history. More than 80,000 Loyalists left America, most of them settling in Canada.

BOOK - A Bard of Wolfe’s Army: James Thompson, Gentleman Volunteer, 1733-1830
Edited by Earl John Chapman & Ian Macpherson McCulloch
Published by Robin Brass Studio, Montreal, 2010
As a young grenadier in Fraser’s Highlanders, Sergeant James Thompson served in the capture of Louisbourg in 1758, the battle of the Plains of Abraham at Quebec in 1759 and the battle of Sillery the following year. Later he experienced the American blockade of Quebec by Generals Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold during the Revolutionary War. He remained in Quebec the rest of his long life. His collected anecdotes form one of the most interesting personal accounts of soldiering during the Seven Years’ War, and his journal offers an authentic first-hand view of life in Quebec in the years that followed. In this book, editors Earl Chapman and Ian McCulloch not only present Thompson's anecdotes in one volume for the first time, but they also provide a wealth of explanation and historical background that helps to bring the period to life and places Thompson's experiences in context.

BOOK - A dirty, trifling, piece of business, Volume I: The Revolutionary War as Waged from Canada in 1781
By Gavin K. Watt
With research assistance of James F. Morrison and William A. Smy
By 1781, the sixth year of the American rebellion, British strategic focus had shifted from the northern states to concentrate in the south. Canada's governor, Frederick Haldimand, was responsible for the defence of the Crown's largest colony against the threat of Franco-American invasion, while assisting overall British strategy. He cleverly employed his sparse resources to vigorously raid the rebels' frontiers and create anxiety, disruption, and deprivation, as his Secret Service undermined their morale with invasion rumours and threatened their Union by negotiating with the independent republic of Vermont to return to the British fold.

BOOK - I am heartily ashamed, Volume II: The Revolutionary War's Final Campaign as Waged from Canada in 1782
By Gavin K. Watt
With research assistance of James F. Morrison and William A. Smy
The second installment in Gavin K. Watt's Revolutionary War trilogy, I am heartily ashamed picks up where A dirty trifling piece of business leaves off. It's a new year with new challenges. An incredibly fierce Canadian winter was endured before raiding was resumed against the enemy's frontiers. Haldimand chose to alter his strategy, giving command of large projects to First Nations leaders whose methods greatly challenged the rebels. A new British ministry announced a cessation of arms in July, soon followed by peace talks. When Haldimand discovered that the treaty's articles threatened the security of Canada and made no provisions for the natives or loyalists, he confessed, "My soul is completely bowed down with grief I am heartily ashamed."

BOOK - Through So Many Dangers: The Memoirs and Adventures of Robert Kirk, Late of the Royal Highland Regiment [British Army]
Edited by Ian M. McCulloch & Timothy J. Todish
Introduction: Stephen Brumwell; Artwork: Robert Griffing
Published by Robins Brass Studio, Montreal, 2004
Robert Kirk (aka Kirkwood) served with the 42nd and 77th Highland Regiments during the Seven Years War of the 1750s and Pontiac’s Rebellion. From Niagara Falls to Newfoundland, from the Carolinas to the Mississippi, he covered some 5000 miles by foot, canoe, whaleboat and transport ship. By the time he returned home after ten years of “service truly critical,” our roguish hero had been captured and adopted by the Shawnee Indians. He became an accomplished marksman, hunter and tracker, proficient in the use of canoes, snowshoes and tumplines. Robert Kirk's memoirs, reprinted here for the first time since 1775, bring his exciting story to life. A riveting read for those who are interested in the period.
