Existing acccounts depict the Anglo-Native alliance in War of 1812 as one of convenience against a common enemy. The author's goal in this military study was to reveal the alliance as driven by something more tangible - a politically agreed objective to establish a Native homeland south of the Great lakes. This promise by military leaders was endorsed by the British government. Despite the initial military successes (at Detroit, Frenchtown and Ft. Meigs) strategic priorities did not sustain the promise and after the disastrous battle of Lake Erie, the Native Allies threatened to defect. The ensuing battle of Moraviantown sealed the fate of the alliance and determined mastry of the heart of a continent. In this context, the central figure in these events, the much maligned Major General Henry Procter emerges as a tragic figure, bereft of means yet bound by a promise not of his making, one that he could not keep. For his pains he was scapegoated by the same leaders that placed him in such dire straits. Based largely on primary sources this book examines the strategies and personalities as well as the naval and land engagements. Also revealed are the massacres, propoganda and legacy of the conflict.
