M A P S , A T L A S E S & G A Z E T T E E R S More Canadian Resources | More Manitoba Resources BOOK - Historical Atlas of Manitoba, A selection of Facsimile Maps, Plans and Sketches from 1612 to 1969 By John Warkentin and Richard Ruggles - Manitoba Historical Society The intention of the authors, when compiling this historical atlas was to give readers an understanding of the historical and geographical development of the area which Manitoba was at the time the book was published. This was accomplished with facsimile maps, selected to show the main events and cultural processes that were importwant in the growth of the whole or any part of the area from the time of the earliest map, made in 1612, to 1969. The first part of the atlas, showing maps of the period 1612 to 1800, was prepared by Professor Richard Ruggles of the Department of Geography,Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. He is an authority on early mapping of interior Canada. He collected data on the maps of that area in map repositories in London, Washington and Ottawa while preparing his doctoral dissertation for the UNiversity of London. Professor John Warkentin prepared parts II and III of the atlas, covering the periods from 1801 to 1869, and 1870 to 1969. The volume includes short essays as introductions to each section of maps. Bibliographical descriptions accompany each map depicted. The maps are numbered in the table of contents and in the descriptive notes facing each map but the numbers have not been imposed n the maps themselves. 585 pgs; 9" X 12"; hardcover;pub 1970 (no ISBN number)
