BOOK - United Empire Loyalists Lists 1775-1783.
By: Keith Fitzgerald.

This book lists over 200 Loyalist Names and Families from the Haldimand Papers. The Loyalist Lists was originally compiled from the Haldimand Papers and published in 1984. Governor Frederick Haldimand was in command of the Province of Quebec/Canada (1778-1785). The list gives the researcher a very good idea of which U.E. Loyalists comprised the migration into central Canada, as opposed to the migration to the Maritime provinces. Contrary to poplular myth, the two migrations were not similar and not directly connected.

The migration into central Canada was a gradual process. Some Loyalists made their way down Lake Champlain towards Montreal. Others moved the forts of the Upper County and found shelter at Oswego, Niagara and Detroit. Some men, and families, arrived as early as 1775, and continued coming after the peace treaty of 1783.

The Loyalist Lists, based on the Haldimand records, focusses on the origianl Ontario U.E. Loyalists, as distinct from those who went first to the Maritimes. It may help us to understand why Ontario, too, is a Loyalist province, entitled to its own day of celebration.
