BOOK - Mary Janeway, The Legacy of a Home Child
By Mary Pettit
Published by Dundurn, Toronto, 2000
This edition published by Dundurn, Toronto, 2009

Mary Janeway is the story of a little girl's childhood while living on a farm as a domestic servant in the late 1800s.

Based on extensive historical research, Mary's story begins in Scotland where family circumstances lead to her being sent to Canada as a home child. Separated from her siblings, Mary, at age eight, is sent to a farm near Innerkip, Ontario, where the Jacques family "needed a girl."

Her story brings into focus the intimate details of hardship and deprivation experienced by the many of the thousands of young people sent to Canada between 1869 and 1939.

Mary Janeway is godmother to author Mary (Hewson) Pettit. Pettit followed up this book with a continuation of the story of Mary Janeway's experiences in her 2012 book, Whatever Happened to Mary Janeway, A Home Child Story

Authors Note:
author: Mary Pettit"Mary Janeway is a real person. Over time she told her stories to me. Innerkip is a town in rural Ontario, in Oxford County. The Jacgues family did live outside of Innerkip.

Not all characters, however, are real; I chose names for them at random while wandering through Innerkip Cemetery one rainy afternoon. They are fictional and any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental. The book, The Early Days of Innerkip District by Zella Hotson, provided much of the historical context.

I have taken some literary liberties and indulged in some embellishments while conscious of preserving the integrity of my dstory. My intertion was to show compassion for characters and record the events accurately as my research and memory would permit."
