BOOK - Vol. 10 - Fegan's Homes Newsletters. The Red Lamp 1913-20
Compiled by Douglas V. Fry & Fawne Stratford-Devai Introduction by Marj Kohli Index by Fawne Stratford-Devai Another historical reprint by Global Heritage Press Between 1869 and the early 1930s, over 100,000 children were sent to Canada from Great Britain during the child emigration movement. Sometimes referred to as waifs and strays, emigrant children and simply orphans, today these children are collectively known as British Home Children. A number of sending agencies were involved in bringing children to Canada, including Fegan Homes. The newsletters of the Fegan Homes span a vast time period, from 1877 to the present day. All newsletters from 1877 to 1920 will be brought to print with introductions and complete indexes. In order to cover a 43-year period, 10 volumes will be produced. This book, Volume 10 in the series, contains reprints of the pages of the newsletters that were published between 1913 and 1920 under the name of The Red Lamp. First and foremost, the newsletters reflect Fegan's own religious beliefs - beliefs from which he drew strength to carry out his mission. Not surprisingly, the newsletters are often subtitled, An Occasional Record of Home-Missionary Efforts. Whether soliciting donations for his "proposals" (e.g. to build a home for the boys, sink a well and treat the water on the Farm), or raising enough money to send a party of boys to Canada, the newsletters clearly worked to bring in donations. One of the more interesting fund raising endeavours was the money sent back to England from the Old Boys. Beginning in about 1890, Fegan Boy's who had been sent to Canada, and who voluntarily repaid ten pounds sterling to Fegan's to help to give other poor fellows a chance in life, were placed on the Roll of Honour and given a medallion. The boy's name was usually inscribed on the medallion. The Roll of Honour is routinely published in the newsletters, listing the date the boy was sent out to Canada, their name and the date they repaid their £10. In addition, Old Boys are regularly recorded in the newsletters as sending additional donations for special occasions, to assist with special fundraising efforts, or to help other boys to go to Canada. For example, in January of 1915, the Old Boys cabled back to England, five thousand, four hundred and fifty dollars. At the same time, the newsletters are filled with stories of how various boys came into Fegan's care, or boys who were doing well in Canada with supportive families and placements. Mr. Fegan placed great emphasis on the after-care given to boys in Canada. We know that every year inspections were made of the homes and circumstances of the boys under 18. The original Canadian record books bear testimony to this. The newsletters, however, tell us about the most positive and promising placements. 176 pgs; 6" x 9" hard cover; originally pub 1913 - 1920; this reprint 2003; new index 2003; ISBN 1-894378-99-7
