BOOK - Canada Company Remittance Books - 1843 - 1847
Genealogical Extraction and Index compiled and indexed by Ruth Holt and Margaret Williams in 1990.

The Canada Company was formed in 1824, chartered in 1826 and continued its business until 1950. After the war of 1812, there were many claimants to the government for damages incurred throughout the war. The British government agreed to pay part of these claims and the government of Upper Canada agreed to pay the rest. To meet the expense, the Executive Council of the government of Upper Canada decided to sell huge tracts of land in the west of the province.

The Archives of Ontario has records of the Company's service of remitting money across the ocean for Emigrants, both in the sending of money to friends and family and in forwarding money to have available at the settlers destination when traveling from Canada. The volumes date from 1843 and the amounts were recorded in Canada in the Advice Books. The Letter Books, three volumes, record the receipt of the money in London, England, along with the destinations. It is the destinations that are of value to Genealogists for they state the exact postal locations and sometimes the occupation of the recipient and the relationship of the sender as well as the location of the sender in North America. The extraction and indexing of these names becomes a valuable research aid for early Ontario research.

Approx. 250 pgs./ 3 sections/ 8 - 1/2 by 11/ wirebound / softcover.
