Donald Whyte's volumes of A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation (pre-1867) are a major contribution to the documentation of Canadian immigration before 1867. The labour of many years, the series has been appreciated by historians, biographers, and genealogists.
The Scots, for decades Canada's third largest ethnic group, have been vigorous in every field of endeavor. The author claims that the Scots have contributed more than any other ethnic group, to the making of a transcontinental nation.
These volumes are an indespensible tool for those in search of their Scottish ancestry. Much of the material is unique. The author consulted numerous sources, printed and manuscript, and, by extensive corespondence gathered much information that would not otherwise have been saved for posterity. It is impossible not to be grateful for this enormous labour of love.
Vol. 1 of Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederation published in 1986,contains over 12,500 entries and is an indispensable tool for those in search of their Scottish ancestry. Much of the material is unique.
Vol. 2, published in 1996, adds an additional 11,000 entries give information about those Scots who came to Canada before Confederation.
Vol. 3, published in 2002, adds an additional 1820 new entries, plus appendices with information about emigrants noted in the volumes published in 1986 and 1996. Volume three will be the last volume in the series
Vol. 4, published 2005, the final volume in this series includes entries for settlers, pastors, shoemakers, and captains in the militia as well as those who did or did not survive shipwrecks and fires.
