About Us: Lanark County Genealogical Society -- A Short History

On March 27, 1981, twenty-four genealogy enthusiasts met near Smiths Falls Ont., to discuss the formation of a local genealogy society. This group grew in scope and number to become the Lanark County Genealogical Society in 1982.

In 20 years the membership has grown to over 350 in Canada, United States, Great Britain, Australia.

The mandate of the Lanark County Genealogical Society is to assist members in researching family histories and in the gathering, recording and preserving of genealogical information pertaining to Lanark County.

The LCGS is an independent group, yet maintains close ties with the Kingston, Ottawa and Leeds & Grenville branches of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

Published works which have been completed by the collective and individual efforts on the part of our members are listed on this website along with other publications related to Lanark County which are available from other sources.

Also the Kingston and Ottawa branches of the Ontario Genealogical Society have published many of the cemeteries, census and church records of Lanark County. A list of these is also provided (see Published works).

The LCGS normally meets at 8 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month with the exceptions of no meeting in January, afternoon meetings on the first Saturdays of February and March. The meetings are held at different locations througout Lanark County in an effort to accommodate all members of our group, as well as giving our members a chance to access and familiarize themselves with the various museums, libraries and institutions within our County. See the current meeting schedule for locations.

The majority of these meetings feature guest speakers, on a variety of topics, which can include doing genealogical research, history of Lanark County, family histories, the availability of research materials, and a whole lot more.

Heritage House Museum 11 Old Sly's Road, Smiths Falls

About Us: Membership in LCGS/ Newsletter Info

The LCGS is a registered charity. Only donations to the LCGS beyond the annual membership fees are tax deductable. Receipts will be issued automatically for donations $25.00 and over; receipts for amounts between $10.00 and $24.99 will be sent only on request.

A newsletter is sent out to our members approximately 9 times per year. These newsletters include articles submitted by our members, and queries from our members requesting information on families and places within Lanark County. (Most of the past surname queries on this web site have been taken from previous LCGS newsletters). Submissions to the newsletter (ie family histories, articles, surname queries) are always welcome. Please submit your items no later than the 15th of each month.

Surname/research queries may be placed in the newsletter only by non-members upon payment of (Can.) $5.00. In this case, please mail your cheque and query to our postal address.

To update a Query on this Site:

Please send an email to the Query Chairperson: Michael Jaques lanarkquery(at)sympatico.ca or the Query Assistant: Gary Byron gjbyron@magma.ca indicating which page you would like to update (it's in the address bar of your browser), your name, membership #, and updated text.

The LCGS is the major sponsor of  the Lanark County Archives. This new group is expected to eventually have its own board of directors and become a separate group from the LCGS, but in the meantime, the LCGS is soliciting donations for the Archives. These donations are also tax-deductable. Please indicate whether your donation is for the LCGS or the Lanark County Archives.

The LCGS is not affiliated with the Ontario Genealogical Society, so our individual and family membership annual fee is only $15.00. Membership includes a postal subscription to the LCGS newsletter (9 issues per year) and the placement of your family research interests in the newsletter.

Memberships run from January to December only. Those joining after January also receive the back issues of the current year's newsletters. The one exception is for those joining in November -- their membership is extended for the next year. So please remember, memberships are due in January of each year.

Please make cheques or money orders payable to: Lanark County Genealogical Society, and mail to our postal address. Sorry, but we do not have the facility to process credit cards.

About Us: Answering Queries by Postal Mail

If you respond to a query which gives a postal address, you must enclose a self-addressed envelope and payment of postage in your letter. It is amazing how many people don't realize that the postage stamps of their country can't be used to mail a letter from another country. If you live in Canada, for example, and are writing to someone in the USA, either put US postage stamps on the enclosed self-addressed envelope (that's the one that you put your own address on) or enclose a US $1.00 bill.

Likewise, Canadian stamps must be used to mail letters from Canada to another country, so if you are writing from outside Canada to a Canadian address, either put Canadian stamps on the enclosed self-addressed envelope or enclose a US $1.00 bill.

International Reply Coupons may be purchased at your local post office. They used to be a reasonable and secure way to pre-pay postage between any two countries, but they are now far too expensive to use. For example, Canadian post offices charge at least $3.50 for an IRC which in the US can be redeemed at a post office for one 46-cent stamp to pay the postage to Canada! So it's obviously much cheaper to include a US $1.00 bill in your out-of-country query.

Another convenient option is to order your postage stamps by telephone. Here is a partial transcript of a discussion taken from the internet. Thanks to Gary McLean for providing the following information:

"The U.S. Postal Service advised me that you could order US Postage Stamps by telephone by calling 1-800-782-6724.

"When I called this number, the postal clerk advised me that yes I could purchase stamps by mail.  The cost would be the cost of the stamps in US dollars plus a $1.00 service fee (US$)  for each order, no matter how large.   They also indicated that the 800 telephone number could be accessed in Ontario.

"With respect to purchasing Canadian postage stamps, I have purchased them by telephone from Canada Post Corporation, Philatelic Service.  The telephone number which I called from Maryland is 1-800-565-4362.  The cost was the cost of the postage stamps in Canadian dollars.  There was no service charge and I received the postage stamps in about a week." [Ed. Note: Orders sent to Canadian addresses will be charged GST].

"With respect to the UK, I found a web site for the Royal Mail (www.royalmail.co.uk) which provided information on ordering postage stamps by mail, telephone or fax."

Ed. Note: A query to a contact on the above website produced the following information: Stamps can be ordered directly from the British Philatelic Bureau by e-mail provided you are paying by either Visa or Mastercard. Their e-mail address is British.Philatelic.Bureau@dial.pipex.com.

Alternatively you can send your orders by post to:
British Philatelic Bureau,
20 Brandon Street,
EDINBURGH,
EH3 5TT,
SCOTLAND,
UK

Payment can be made by personal cheque drawn in dollars if you do not have one of the above credit cards.

August 8, 1998 -- This helpful comment from Margaret Bradford:

"I have discovered a way of obtaining British stamps very easily.  (Go to any) coin and stamp shop and by requesting mint stamps, it is possible to buy enough stamps to put on an envelope for a very reasonable amount.  For example, I recently bought a complete set of an old issue of mint stamps, 79p value in total, for 80 cents (Canadian).  The set was on sale for a dollar, but there was a 20% sale on too!! I expect that it is possible to obtain U.S. and other European stamps in the same way."
Ed note: Better stock up now before they discover that they're selling these stamps at about 1/3 their value in Canadian currency at today's exchange rates!

About Us: LCGS Web Site Stats

  • Original Creation Date: April 6, 1997, by Charlie Dobie using his personal website space on Superaje.com. LCGS went live on this site about May 6, 1997.

  • Moved to Global Genealogy Supply's server on April 4, 1998 and went live on April 6, 1998, at which time 4953 users had visited the site on Superaje.

  • There are some exciting things waiting to get onto the website -- several more family Bibles courtesy of LCGS member John Maguire, and a (I'm tempted to call it stunning) collection of about 50 letters all written to Charlotte McKinnon who was a cook and housekeeper for many families in Lanark and North Frontenac counties. These letters were found in the wall of a house in Fallbrook; they cover the period 1917 to 1936. 'Nuff said for now -- it's going to take a while to get them transcribed and to try to track down someone connected to the McKinnon family who lived in Barriefield, (near Kingston) in the 1920's.

  • Dec. 10/98 -- well, those letters still haven't made it. However, the full text of Rev. William Bell's Hints to Emigrants is now a welcome addition to the website. Technical problems prevented any November updates, so I'm running way behind. And with holiday madness just around the corner I don't expect to get ahead of the game until the new year.

  • Jan. 26/99 -- The work is still piling up and I guess that's good. I shouldn't even have mentioned the letters, as they keep getting shuffled to the bottom of the pile. I've just added a "Break out of someone else's frames" line on the main screen. I've no way of testing this, so please let me know if it doesn't work.

  • Week of March 5/99 -- A major Lanark County blizzard is keeping me indoors, so I've decided to fix some things which weren't broken. I've used a very simple style sheet on the lookup tables. Those whose website browsers don't support style sheets shouldn't notice any difference. The rest of you should find the surnames jumping out of the screen at you. Also, I've been working on a new project -- I'm transcribing all of the Eastern Ontario portions of the 1846 Smith's Gazetteer for Canada West. Everything in the book relating to the old Bathurst, Dalhousie, Eastern, Johnstown, Midland and Ottawa Districts is being transcribed. And after that's finished, there's even a bigger project -- something which will add over 1,000 names and addresses of ex-Lanark County people who sent in their names to the 1905 Perth Old Boys and Girls Reunion. Stay tuned!

  • March 18/99 -- Global Genealogy's changeover to a new file server is complete and the long-awaited update and addition of many files was done this evening. The new server should be faster and able to handle the greatly increased traffic.

  • August 9/99 -- A site map was added in June (I never claimed this was an up-to-date log!). The site map should be a help to frequent users, as it gives you a complete map of the website all in one page. Also, please check out the updated CALL FOR PHOTOGRAPHS section above. So it looks like the Photo of the Month section is also history. This is too bad, but Global Genealogy can't be expected to provide us with unlimited disk space. If we keep adding photos at the current rate, we will soon exceed 10MB of disk space. Text data is far more important to researchers. One possible alternative solution would be for some kind person to volunteer to share disk space with us. The photos could be moved to the donated disk space and links to the photos would reside on the LCGS website. There are currently about 1MB of photos and photo-related files on the website.

  • August 9/99 --If you don't renew your LCGS membership your queries can't remain on this website. Remember that memberships are due on the first of the new year, regardless of when you purchased your membership. (Those joining part way through the year are sent the back issues of the newsletter for that year). An exception is made for those who join in November -- your membership will be extended to include the next year. Please read becoming an LCGS member.
