THE PAISLEY TOWNHEAD EMIGRATION SOCIETY LIST

This document is reprinted from the November, 1994 edition of the LCGS Newsletter.

These names were "found" by Jerry McGregor and were transcribed by the very patient Marilyn Snedden.

A casual conversation while lined up for lunch at the Subway has resulted in the sharing of an important "find" in the National Archives! Jerry McGregor of Ottawa lives near the Archives and has spent many hours searching for his ancestors in their files. When looking through microfilm B-880, he chanced upon the following listing which he showed to the archivist on duty who expressed great interest in it. It is a listing from 1820 of people from the Paisley area in Scotland who were being recommended to the British Government as being worthy of assistance to emigrate to Upper Canada.

This document gives the applicant's name, his age, where he was born, his trade and present place of residence as well as his wife's age, her place of birth and the ages of their children (male and female). In some cases, the handwriting was very difficult to decipher; in those instances you will find a (?) on our copy.

Preceding the listing on the microfilm is a letter which was written in Paisley, Scotland on Sept. 28, 1820 to the Earl of Bathurst by the Paisley Townhead Emigration Society requesting confirmation of the names of people being sent to Canada. The Society was requesting confirmation as it was the custom to give notice to the landlords by the 11th Nov. if they wished to keep their rental accomodation after the 11th May the following year.

This microfilm is available at the National Archives (or through inter-library loan) as reel B-880 and is titled: Colonial Office - Original Correspondence - Secretary of State. Contents of this microfilm also include: Emigration 1820 - North America Offices (contains petitions from individuals telling why they should be allowed to emigrate) as well as smaller listings from 3-4 other Societies, most of whose people actually did emigrate.

NOTE: see another list on this website listing the 1821 immigration to Ramsay Township.

Due to space constraints, we had to abbreviate the place names in our "version" of the Paisley Townhead Emigration Society listings. The following listing is a guide to those abbreviations.
