03/15/2001 - email from MP Jerry Pickard to Robert Neil. March 15, 2001 Robert Neil Rneil@ciaccess.com Dear Mr. Neil: Thank you for providing me with your views on Post 1901 Census Records. I share your views on this issue, and I have been in touch with both Statistics Canada and the Minister of Industry on several occasions on behalf of constituents who have also expressed their support in this regard. Please rest assured that I will continue to press the Minister to act upon the Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records' recommendations as soon as possible. I appreciate your taking the time to keep me informed of your efforts in this important matter. Best wishes. Yours very truly, Jerry Pickard, M.P. Chatham - Kent Essex 03/13/2001 - email to MP Jerry Pickard from Robert Neil. From: Robert Neil Sent: March 13, 2001 9:32 PM To: Pickard.J@parl.gc.ca Subject: Re: Census release Mr. Jerry Pickard, I hope that you can answer the following question with a positive reply and vote FOR. "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. (1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)" If you realized how many genealogists rely on census information you would have less of a reason to vote against the bill. After 92 years there could be no information that could not become public information. A persons will, for example, becomes public as soon as it is probated and to me it might be more private than any census questions. Therefore, Jerry, I hope you can switch from 'no response' to 'for' the passing of the census release bill. Regards, Robert Neil Chatham-Kent, ON rneil@ciaccess.com 04/30/99- e-mail from The Global Gazette to MP
A web site has been posted at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to record MP's responses, so that those who are interested, will know the position that their elected representative has (or has not expressed) on the issue. Also included on the web site, is a correspondence log for each Member of Parliament, which will contain responses to this e-mail plus any other correspondence from the MP. The Question: "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)" If you would like to expand on your position, your entire response will be posted to your individual correspondence log. The Post 1901 Census web site is sponsored by Global Genealogy & History Bookstore. A vast number of e-mails and calls from subscribers and web site visitors, clearly demonstrates that this issue is extremely important to them. Many readers have expressed that their current MP's position on this issue will weigh heavily in their decision process during the next election. |
