POST 1901 CANADIAN CENSUS PROJECT
Open the door to Canada's Historic Census

1906 Census of NorthWest Provinces Released.

On Friday January 24, 2003, a joint News Release by Minister of Industry Allan Rock, and Minister of Heritage Sheila Copps, announced the immediate release of the 1906 Special Census of the Northwest Provinces. Within minutes of this announcement, Ian E. Wilson, National Archivist of Canada, announced that scanned images of the 1906 Census schedules are now accessible online. Senator Lorna Milne, and Member of Parliament Murray Calder followed with News Releases commending the Ministers for the release of the 1906 Census records.

In releasing these records and placing them online without restrictions of any kind, in the same manner that 235 years of Census Records before them have been available, the government has conceded that existing legislation allows them to do so.

Since early 1998, Canadians and people living elsewhere but who have Canadian ancestry, have sought to regain the public access to Historic Census records in Canada that was denied by Statistics Canada. Until the release of the 1906 records, indications were that no records of Census of Canada after 1901 would be made available to public access. Efforts to regain unrestricted public access to subsequent Historic Census records, 92 years after collection, continue
